The RHS Chelsea Flower Show is considered one of the most prestigious events on the royal family’s summer calendar. While the public opening of the show is scheduled for 21 May, members of the royal family often attend a special preview the night before. This year, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester have been confirmed as guests at the gala preview at the Royal Hospital Chelsea on 20 May. The Duke, who is the cousin of the late Queen Elizabeth II, is a regular attendee at the annual show along with his wife, Birgitte. However, it has not been confirmed yet whether the King and Queen will be in attendance this year.
The royal family has a long-standing association with the Chelsea Flower Show, with Queen Elizabeth II having been the patron of the Royal Horticultural Society for the entirety of her 70-year reign. The late Queen’s last visit to the show was in May 2022, just four months before her passing at the age of 96. Other members of the royal family have also made their mark at the Chelsea Flower Show. Prince Harry commissioned gardens in support of his charity Sentebale in 2013 and 2015, while the Princess of Wales co-designed the child-friendly Back to Nature garden in 2019. Even Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, has brought her children – Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis – to enjoy the garden before its official opening. Additionally, she participated in the inaugural children’s picnic at the show last year, a new annual event. However, it remains uncertain whether Kate will be able to attend this year’s show as she undergoes preventative chemotherapy following her cancer diagnosis.
The Chelsea Flower Show has a rich history dating back to its origins as the Great Spring Show held by the RHS in Kensington in 1862. Queen Victoria was among the early visitors to the event. The show as we know it today, the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, began in 1913 and has been an annual tradition in May, with only a few exceptions during the World Wars and the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
