The Prince of Wales recently announced a new initiative to address the issue of homelessness in the South West of England. Working in collaboration with the Cornish homelessness charity, St Petrocs, the project aims to provide 24 homes in Nansledan, Newquay, with additional support services for local individuals experiencing homelessness. This development is set to commence in September, with the first wave of homes expected to be completed by the fall of the following year.
Speaking about the project, Henry Meacock, the chief executive of St Petrocs, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership with the Duchy of Cornwall. He highlighted the importance of creating high-quality temporary accommodation that feels like home, while also emphasizing the significance of establishing a clear pathway to permanent housing for those in need. Meacock believes that this collaboration will pave the way for more individuals to transition out of homelessness for good.
Prince William’s upcoming project draws inspiration from a five-year initiative called Homewards, led by The Royal Foundation of the Prince and Princess of Wales. This program aims to mobilize local coalitions of dedicated individuals, organizations, and businesses to work together towards preventing and ultimately ending homelessness in their respective communities.
The Prince of Wales’s Cornish estate, which spans 130,000 acres from Cornwall to Kent, is one of the largest and oldest landed estates in Britain. Established in 1337 by Edward III to support his son and heir, Prince Edward, also known as the Black Prince, the estate has a rich history. The Prince of Wales, who inherited the estate following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II and the ascension of his father Charles, continues to uphold the legacy of the Duchy.
The Duchy of Cornwall has reported record profits, with an increase from £23.024 million to £24.048 million in the previous financial year. In a statement acknowledging his father’s influence on the Duchy, the Prince of Wales expressed his commitment to addressing climate change and highlighted the estate’s efforts to contribute to this global challenge.
