The Duke of Sussex’s Strong Bond with Diana, Princess of Wales’s Family

The Duke of Sussex, Prince Harry, has always maintained a close relationship with the family of his late mother, Diana, Princess of Wales. Diana grew up with three siblings, including her older sisters Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Lady Jane Fellowes, as well as her younger brother Charles, 9th Earl Spencer. The Earl is the custodian of Althorp estate in Northampton, the childhood home of Princess Diana.

Prince Harry discreetly flew from the US to the UK to attend the funeral of his uncle, Lord Robert Fellowes, in Snettisham, Norfolk, on 28 August. Lord Fellowes, who was a former equerry to the late Queen, was married to Diana’s sister, Lady Jane Fellowes. During his visit, it was reported that Harry stayed at Althorp estate, where his mother Diana is buried. The funeral coincided with the anniversary of Diana’s death on 31 August, further emphasizing the bond between the siblings’ families.

Over the years, the Spencer family has been a pillar of support for Prince William and Prince Harry. During their mother’s funeral, Uncle Charles Spencer walked with the young princes as they mourned Diana’s passing. He also delivered a poignant eulogy at the service, showcasing the family’s closeness during difficult times.

From unveiling a statue of Diana to marking Harry’s Invictus Games anniversary, the Spencer family has always been by their side. Prince Harry has taken his wife, Meghan, to visit Althorp estate and pay respects at Diana’s grave. In his memoir, released in 2023, Harry recalled a poignant moment when he and Meghan rowed across to the private island where Diana was laid to rest. The Duke’s relationship with his mother’s family goes beyond just family ties, showcasing a deep emotional connection with his roots.
