King Charles has made his way back to London after his stay in Sandringham, in preparation for his upcoming surgery to treat an enlarged prostate. Ahead of his arrival, the Poetry Medal Committee announced the winner of His Majesty’s Gold Medal for Poetry. This prestigious honor was bestowed upon Iranian-British poet Mimi Khalvati. The Gold Medal for Poetry, established by King George V in 1933, recognizes poets from Britain or any Commonwealth nation for their excellence in the field.
Mimi Khalvati’s poetic talent lies in her ability to draw from her Iranian and British background, enriching the landscape of British poetry. With nine published poetry collections to her name, Mimi has established herself as a prominent figure in the poetry world. Her poem, “Persian Miniatures,” won the Poetry Business Prize in 1990, and her collection “The Meanest Flower” was shortlisted for the T.S. Eliot Prize in 2007, earning her accolades from the Poetry Book Society.
Prior to his surgery, King Charles dutifully cancelled his engagements and was ordered to rest. His decision to share his diagnosis publicly was driven by a desire to encourage other men who may be experiencing similar symptoms to seek medical attention, aligning with health advice. Charities have lauded this move as it promotes awareness and encourages early detection.
The expected course of treatment for King Charles involves a hospital stay of one to two nights, followed by a recuperation period at home ranging from 10 to 14 days. During this time, the King will be advised to take it easy and refrain from strenuous activities, although he may engage in lighter tasks at home.
Professor Damien Bolton, the Vice President of the Urological Society of Australia and New Zealand, provided insight into the procedure, highlighting that these surgeries are typically minimally invasive and require no skin incisions. Approximately 25,000 similar procedures are performed each year.
Coincidentally, just 90 minutes prior to Buckingham Palace’s announcement about King Charles’ upcoming surgery, Kensington Palace revealed that the Princess of Wales, Kate, is recovering from abdominal surgery at The London Clinic. It is anticipated that Kate will remain at the clinic for a few more days before continuing her recuperation at home in Windsor.
Despite her hospitalization, Kate has been able to stay connected with her children – George, Charlotte, and Louis – through video calls. In the meantime, Prince William has taken on a reduced workload to support his family and be by his wife’s side. He was recently spotted visiting Kate at the hospital, showing his unwavering support.
