Mayor Johnston expressed her displeasure with the film’s portrayal of the sunny paradise of Key West. She pointed out that while she hadn’t seen the movie, she was not happy with its depiction of the Florida Keys as rowdy, drug-filled, and crime-ridden. According to her, the Key West shown in the film might have been accurate for the ’70s and ’80s, but it is entirely different in 2024.
Mayor Johnston highlighted that 90% of Key West residents are transplants, representing a diverse mix of environmentalists, artists, business owners, teachers, firefighters, and police officers. Key West is a place where successful individuals come to live their best lives. She emphasized that Key West has maintained a reputation for being a safe and exciting destination for visitors. Even during massive celebrations like New Year’s Eve, the crime rate remains impressively low, with only one arrest made in Key West.
The Mayor proudly stated that the residents of Key West have evolved from the wild era of the ’80s to become responsible stewards of the community. They embody the city’s motto of “One Human Family” and are committed to upholding the values of unity and harmony. Mayor Johnston emphasized the transformation of Key West into a peaceful and welcoming place for all.
Mayor Merrill Raschein of Monroe County, FL, shared Mayor Johnston’s sentiments. She mentioned that the Florida Keys, including Key West, are fortunate to be law-abiding and peaceful communities. Despite the film’s portrayal, Mayor Raschein reassured that the only accurate depiction of the Florida Keys in “Road House” was their local attraction, Fred the Tree on the 7 Mile Bridge. Additionally, she clarified that the movie was filmed in the Dominican Republic and not in Monroe County.
The feedback from Key West’s Mayor Teri Johnston and Monroe County’s Mayor Merrill Raschein shed light on the inaccurate portrayal of their beloved community in Jake Gyllenhaal’s “Road House.” The vibrant, diverse, and safe environment of Key West is not accurately represented in the film.
