Inside the Lives of Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary’s Four Children

On Sunday, Denmark will witness a historic moment as Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary ascend to the throne, succeeding Queen Margrethe. This transition will also mark the passage of the crown to their 18-year-old son, Prince Christian, who will become the Crown Prince of Denmark. Let’s take a closer look at Prince Christian and his siblings, and discover more about their lives within the Danish royal family.

Born on October 15, 2005, at Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen, Prince Christian’s birth was a moment of great significance for the Danish royals. He was named Christian, following the longstanding tradition of Danish monarchs naming their first-born sons either Christian or Frederik.

Christian’s baptism took place in January 2006 at the Christiansborg Palace Chapel, where notable figures such as Prince Joachim, Crown Prince Pavlos of Greece, Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway, and Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden stood as his godparents.

The young prince has made several notable achievements, including being the first Danish royal to attend nursery school and a public state school, Tranegårdskolen in Hellerup. At just two years old, he embarked on his first official engagement alongside his late grandfather, Prince Henrik, as they visited the Copenhagen Zoo in 2008.

In 2022, Prince Christian made headlines when he was withdrawn from boarding school, Herlufscholm, due to allegations of bullying and violence. Currently, he is in his final year of secondary education at Ordrup Gymnasium in Gentofte.

As Christian turned 18 last October, Queen Margrethe hosted a grand white-tie gala dinner at Christiansborg Palace in his honor. The event saw the presence of foreign royals, adding a touch of international acclaim to this significant milestone in the prince’s life.

Isabella Henrietta Ingrid Margrethe was born on April 21, 2007, at Rigshospitalet, bringing a wave of joy as she became the first girl to be born into the Danish royal family since the birth of her great aunt, Queen Anne-Marie of Greece, in 1946.

During Isabella’s baptism, her godmothers were Princess Alexia of Greece and Denmark, Frederik’s first cousin, and Queen Mathilde of Belgium. Like her brother Christian, Isabella also attended Tranegårdskolen before continuing her education at Ingrid Jespersens Gymnasieskole. Most recently, she enrolled at Øregård Gymnasium, the alma mater of her father Frederik and uncle Joachim, in Hellerup.

Vincent Frederik Minik Alexander and Josephine Sophia Ivalo Mathilda, affectionately known as the twins of Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary, were born on January 8, 2011, at Rigshospitalet. Vincent arrived into the world 26 minutes before his sister Josephine.

The twins’ baptisms took place in April 2011 at the chapel of the Church of Holmen. Interestingly, Josephine broke with tradition and wore a christening gown from the belongings of her late great-grandmother, Queen Ingrid, while her brother wore the family’s traditional christening gown.

Following in the footsteps of their older siblings, Vincent and Josephine began their education at Tranegårdskolen. As of August 2023, Josephine transitioned to Kildegård Privatskole in Hellerup, marking another milestone in her educational journey. The twins continue to grow under the loving guidance of their royal parents, creating their own path within the Danish monarchy.

The lives of Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary’s four children offer a glimpse into the vibrant world of Danish royalty. As Prince Christian prepares to assume his role as Crown Prince, and Princess Isabella, Vincent, and Josephine continue to forge their own paths, the Danish royal family enters a new era filled with hope and anticipation.
