Euphoria Star Dominic Fike Opens Up About the Challenges of Staying Sober

In a recent interview with Variety, “Euphoria” actor Dominic Fike revealed that show creator Sam Levinson hired a “random lady” to help him maintain sobriety while filming for Season 2. Fike, who portrayed the character Elliot, an addict, disclosed his personal struggle with drug addiction and shared his experience with the unexpected sober coach. However, Fike expressed that this approach backfired, as he found it difficult to connect and relate to the coach due to their differing backgrounds and life experiences.

Difficulties in Connection

Fike emphasized his lack of common ground with the assigned sober coach, stating, “We had nothing in common. We didn’t come from the same places or face the same problems.” Consequently, he found it challenging to take advice from someone he could not relate to or share his struggles with. Without a sense of understanding or mutual experiences, their interactions lacked the depth and connection necessary for effective guidance and support.

Contrasting his experience on “Euphoria,” Fike expressed greater comfort while playing an addict in his latest film, “Little Death.” He attributed this ease to the film’s director, Jack Bergert, who also happens to be one of his closest friends. The presence of a trusted friend and collaborator allowed Fike to navigate the vulnerable portrayal of addiction in a supportive environment where he felt understood and could draw from genuine connections.

Regarding his involvement in “Euphoria” Season 3, Fike admitted that his future on the show remains uncertain. While he previously had conversations with the show’s creators, he shared that communication has become sporadic. Despite the uncertainty, Fike expressed openness to reprising his role, stating that it would be “dope” if he received a call for the forthcoming season. However, he also emphasized that he has other projects to focus on and hinted at the possibility of moving on from the show.

A Tribute to a Lost Co-Star

At the recent 2024 Sundance Film Festival, “Euphoria” cast member Angus Cloud, who tragically passed away in July 2023, was honored for his role in “Freaky Tales.” Acknowledging the tribute, Fike expressed his fondness for Cloud, stating simply, “I just miss him.” Cloud’s untimely death, caused by an accidental overdose involving fentanyl, cocaine, methamphetamine, and other substances, serves as a reminder of the devastating consequences of substance abuse.

Dominic Fike’s candid comments shed light on the complexities of staying sober while working on a television series like “Euphoria.” The disconnect he experienced with his assigned sober coach underscores the significance of building meaningful relationships and connections when offering support to individuals battling addiction. As Fike continues to navigate his career and personal journey, his openness about the challenges he has faced serves as an inspiration to others struggling with similar issues.
