Billy Joel Receives a Special Gift from Madison Square Garden

Billy Joel, an iconic musician, recently concluded his decade-long residency at Madison Square Garden with a bang. The final show was nothing short of spectacular, with tributes from Jimmy Fallon, a surprise guest appearance by Axl Rose, and a star-studded audience that included the likes of Bill Clinton.

To mark this momentous occasion, Madison Square Garden decided to surprise Joel with a special gift – a 1978 Triumph Bonneville motorcycle. This gift was particularly significant as 1978 was the year Joel first played at the venue. As a certified motorcycle enthusiast, Joel was thrilled with the custom-painted bike that featured piano keys, his signature, and the MSG logo on the gas tank.

The motorcycle even made a cameo appearance during the final show, further emphasizing Joel’s passion for bikes. Known to own dozens of motorcycles, some of which are displayed at his motorcycle shop in Oyster Bay, New York, Joel’s collection now includes this unique Triumph Bonneville. With a penchant for European bikes, Joel’s collection reportedly features British makes like Vincent and Royal Enfields as well.

Joel’s love for motorcycles runs deep, as evidenced by his 1982 demo recording of “Motorcycle Song.” However, his passion for riding has not been without its challenges. In the same year as the recording, Joel experienced a frightening accident when a driver pulled out in front of him at a red light on Long Island. Despite sustaining injuries, Joel remained unfazed and determined to continue performing his music.

Reflecting on his accident, Joel quipped that he was never worried about being able to play again, stating, “I play rock ‘n’ roll. I’m not Vladimir Horowitz. I wasn’t that good to begin with.” This humorous yet humble attitude is characteristic of Joel, who remains a musical legend with an enduring passion for motorcycles. The gift from Madison Square Garden serves as a fitting tribute to a musician who has made an indelible mark on the music industry.
