In an interview with People magazine, she stated that the animals living in the mansion were mistreated and malnourished. According to Crystal, the animals appeared depressed and unhappy. She expressed deep sadness, recounting her experiences of walking by the cages and seeing the little birds in dire conditions. Crystal further detailed in her memoir, titled “Only Say Good Things: Surviving Playboy and Finding Myself,” that the birds in the mansion were even dying of thirst.
Crystal Hefner also exposed the deteriorating condition of the Playboy Mansion itself. She described it as a mistreated masterpiece. Despite its grandeur as a beautiful English Tudor home situated on five acres in the heart of LA, Crystal revealed that the mansion was not well-maintained. Claiming that the place was not cleaned thoroughly and suffered from mold, she emphasized that it gradually felt rundown and unpleasant.
Beyond the condition of the mansion, Crystal Hefner disclosed her feelings of entrapment due to her husband’s numerous girlfriends. Living under strict rules, she experienced a confining existence. One particularly strict rule was a curfew of 6:00 p.m., enforced by the pantry staff who would frantically call her phone if she missed it. Crystal even recounted in her memoir the ritualistic routine of rushing to find Hugh Hefner to show him that she had followed the rules, kissing him on the cheek as proof.
Crystal Hefner openly admitted that she was never in love with Hugh Hefner, and her marriage to the magazine mogul came with its own set of sacrifices. She expressed a sense of paying a price for living in the mansion, viewing the world surrounding Playboy as a façade of success and fantasy. However, the reality was different, as she recognized that everyone was expected to sleep with an 80-year-old man. Crystal conveyed a profound sense of disillusionment and regret.
