As Paris prepares for the 2024 Olympics, French police are stepping up their efforts to combat illegal sex work in the city. This includes the establishment of an anti-pimping brigade known as the BRP, which is actively targeting areas such as Bois de Vincennes, Bois de Boulogne, and Belleville to crack down on pimping activities. Checkpoints and road operations are being utilized to disrupt the sex trade in these sectors.
Apart from targeting outdoor areas, authorities are also focusing on night establishments such as cabarets to reinforce anti-sex work laws. The City of Paris and the Public Prosecutor’s Office are working closely to implement prevention and awareness measures to tackle prostitution in the lead-up to the Olympics. While the heightened police presence may provide a sense of security to residents and tourists, it has sparked criticism from certain nonprofit organizations.
Several nonprofit groups have expressed concerns about the crackdown on sex work in Paris, particularly in the context of the upcoming Olympics. These organizations argue that the emphasis on repression may have adverse effects on the health and safety of sex workers. Instead of targeting individual sex workers, they urge authorities to focus on dismantling criminal organizations that exploit and harm them.
Contrary to popular belief, nonprofit organizations have revealed that sex workers are not flocking to Paris in masses due to the Olympics. The high cost of accommodations in the city has made it difficult for sex workers to sustain themselves in such an environment. France’s history of anti-prostitution legislation dates back to 1946 when brothels were officially outlawed. However, the criminalization of purchasing sex services was only introduced in 2016, with the aim of punishing clients instead of sex workers. Despite these measures, the push for stricter enforcement may inadvertently drive sex work further underground, jeopardizing the safety of those involved in the industry.
While the intentions behind the crackdown on prostitution in Paris may be well-meaning, there are valid concerns about the potential harms it may cause to vulnerable populations.
