The International Criminal Court’s chief prosecutor, Karim Khan, has set his sights on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Hamas leaders, accusing both sides of committing crimes against humanity in the ongoing war. Khan announced on Monday that the ICC is seeking arrest warrants for multiple figures involved in the conflict. On the Israeli side, the targets include Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, with allegations of using starvation as a method of warfare, resulting in the suffering and death of Palestinian civilians, including infants, children, and women.
For Hamas officials, including leader Yahya Sinwar and two other high-ranking members, the ICC is pursuing charges of murder, hostage-taking, rape, and sexual assault in connection with an attack on October 7. Both Israeli and Hamas leaders are also accused of “extermination” as part of their actions in the conflict.
Following Khan’s application for arrest warrants, a panel of three judges must review the case and make a decision, a process that could extend up to two months. The legal proceedings add another layer of complexity to the already divisive war, which has sparked global outrage and led to widespread protests, particularly among young people and college students. Some of these demonstrations have turned violent as protesters clash with law enforcement.
The conflict in Gaza has prompted calls for a ceasefire from various quarters, including in the United States. However, Israel has signaled its intent to continue its campaign until Hamas surrenders and releases all hostages. The prolonged nature of the fighting and the mounting casualties have intensified international pressure for a resolution to the conflict.
The pursuit of arrest warrants against top Israeli and Hamas officials by the International Criminal Court represents a significant development in the ongoing war. The accusations of war crimes on both sides underscore the brutal nature of the conflict and the urgent need for accountability for those responsible for atrocities. The judicial process ahead will be closely watched as efforts to bring justice and peace to the region move forward.
