Her return was marked by her appearance on the cover of Vogue France’s May issue. The theme of the Met Gala was “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” in honor of the Costume Institute’s upcoming exhibition. However, the dress code for the event was “The Garden of Time,” inspired by J.G. Ballard’s short story from 1962. While the theme of the ball pays homage to fashion history through various categories, the dress code emphasized the use of florals, both traditional and avant-garde.
The Costume Institute’s exhibition showcased over 400 years of fashion history through approximately 250 rare items from their permanent collection. The exhibition, divided into the categories of land, sea, and sky, highlighted the evolution of fashion over the centuries. Many of the items displayed were too delicate to be worn again, emphasizing the importance of preserving fashion history.
