The Royal Milestone of Princess Catharina-Amalia

Princess Catharina-Amalia, the 20-year-old heir to the Dutch throne, is about to reach a significant milestone this month. Her parents, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima, are preparing to host King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain on a state visit to the Netherlands from 17 to 18 April. This visit will include a grand state banquet at the Royal Palace Amsterdam, where Princess Catharina-Amalia will have the rare opportunity to attend alongside other members of the Dutch royal family.

Known for her elegant and timeless style, Princess Catharina-Amalia has already made headlines with her tiara appearances. At Princess Ingrid Alexandra’s 18th birthday gala in 2022, she made her debut wearing the stunning Dutch Star Button Tiara – a piece previously worn by Queen Maxima on her wedding day in 2002. Later, in 2023, the princess showcased the Ruby Peacock Tiara at Crown Prince Hussein and Princess Rajwa’s wedding reception in Jordan. And most recently, she sparkled in Queen Emma of the Netherlands’ sapphire tiara at Crown Prince Christian of Denmark’s 18th birthday gala.

Despite her royal duties, Princess Catharina-Amalia has been pursuing a degree in Politics, Psychology, Law, and Economics at the University of Amsterdam since September 2022. This academic commitment is just one of the many ways in which the princess is preparing herself for a future role as the queen of the Netherlands. In January 2023, she completed her first official tour of the Dutch Caribbean alongside her parents, further solidifying her diplomatic skills and connections.

Princess Catharina-Amalia is not alone in the royal spotlight. She has two younger sisters – Princess Alexia and Princess Ariane. Princess Alexia, 18, recently graduated from UWC Atlantic College in Wales, while Princess Ariane is currently enrolled at UWC Adriatic in Italy and will turn 17 on 10 April. Together, the three princesses represent a new generation of the Dutch royal family, poised to continue the legacy of their predecessors.

During the upcoming state visit of King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain, a series of official events and engagements have been planned. The visit will begin with an official welcome ceremony at Dam Square in Amsterdam, followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at the National Monument. King Willem-Alexander and King Felipe will also participate in a sports day organized by the Cruyff Foundation and discuss the development of a maritime hydrogen corridor between Bilbao and Amsterdam.

On the second day of the visit, the two kings will attend a business forum for Spanish and Dutch companies, and Felipe will visit the States General of the Netherlands. Meanwhile, Queen Maxima and Queen Letizia will visit LAB6, an organization focused on youth mental health, and attend the Amsterdam Spanish Film Festival at the Royal Theater Tuschinski. The state visit will conclude with a reception at Museum STRAAT in Amsterdam, where Princess Catharina-Amalia will once again be present to represent the Dutch royal family.

Princess Catharina-Amalia’s upcoming milestone during the Spanish state visit is not only a significant moment for her personally but also a testament to the continued importance of royal diplomacy and tradition in the modern world. As she continues to balance her academic pursuits, royal duties, and public appearances, Princess Catharina-Amalia is undoubtedly a promising figure for the future of the Dutch monarchy.
