Celebrating Easter in the Royal Family

The upcoming Easter Sunday for the royal family may not be as grandiose as in previous years due to recent health issues. With King Charles undergoing cancer treatment and the Princess of Wales receiving preventive chemotherapy, the annual celebrations are expected to be more low-key. While the Wales family may opt out of attending the Easter Matins Service at St George’s Chapel, they could still choose to mark the occasion in a private setting, spending quality time with their family within the walls of Windsor Castle.

Former royal chef, Darren McGrady, once shared a rare insight into the extravagant Easter celebrations at the royal residence. Traditionally, the royals are served a mouth-watering roast lamb lunch on Easter Sunday. This practice is deeply rooted in Christian and Protestant beliefs, symbolizing the ‘sacrificial lamb’ from the Old Testament and paying homage to Jesus as the ‘Lamb of God’ who sacrificed himself on the cross. The late Queen had a preference for her meat well done, ensuring she got first choice of slices during the meal.

Apart from the scrumptious roast lamb, the royals would also enjoy a compound salad served alongside the main course. This salad, typically consisting of lettuce, cucumber, mint, and grated carrot, was presented in a kidney dish attached to the plate for an extra touch of elegance. Following the hearty lunch, a second course of cheese and fruit, particularly the Windsor Cheese from the Windsor Dairy, would be served. The Windsor estate was also known for producing sweet white peaches that were highly anticipated by the Queen and her guests.

Being a self-proclaimed “total chocoholic,” the late Queen always had a soft spot for sweet treats like Easter eggs. It is safe to assume that these delights were a staple on the royal family’s Easter menu. Prince William and Princess Kate have been known to organize Easter egg hunts for their children – Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. This fun tradition ensures that there is no shortage of chocolate indulgence in the royal family’s Easter celebrations.

Despite the elaborate Easter menu, it is worth noting that King Charles follows an unconventional eating pattern. It is a well-known fact that he does not typically eat lunch. However, given the tempting array of Easter delights, it is likely that the King would make an exception to savor the special treats. Clarence House even acknowledged this unusual eating habit in a list of 70 facts released for the King’s 70th birthday, showcasing a unique aspect of his lifestyle.

While Easter celebrations in the royal family may be toned down this year, the traditions and culinary delights associated with the holiday remain an integral part of their culture. From the symbolic roast lamb to the decadent Easter eggs, each item on the menu reflects a rich heritage and a shared appreciation for family and togetherness during this festive season.
