Queen Mary of Denmark recently made her first trip outside the country since King Frederik’s accession to attend the Men’s EHF Euro 2024 final between Denmark and France’s national Handball teams. This nail-biting match took place at the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, Germany. The Queen, who will soon be celebrating her 52nd birthday on February 5th, looked elegant in a burgundy Alexander McQueen suit paired with a cream blouse and wide-legged black trousers for this sporty outing.
A Close Contest
With excitement in the air, Queen Mary shared a snap from inside the arena, capturing the tense atmosphere before the second half commenced. In an Instagram post, she described the final as a thrilling and nerve-wracking experience. The Danish team displayed tremendous effort and skill throughout the European Championship, ultimately securing the silver medal. Queen Mary had the honor of presenting this well-deserved accolade to the team. However, it was the reigning Olympic champions, France, who emerged victorious with a narrow 33-31 win, claiming their fourth European men’s handball title.
Queen Mary’s attendance at this prestigious event marked her first solo engagement since her husband’s reign began on January 14th. King Frederik, known for his love of sports, did not join his wife in Germany. Instead, he led a Danish business delegation to Poland from January 31st to February 2nd. The Queen’s presence at the final showcased her continued dedication to representing Denmark on the international stage.
The King’s Word
In a recently released memoir titled “The King’s Word,” King Frederik opened up about his relationship with his late father and his marriage to Queen Mary. Reflecting on his father’s patriarchal nature, he acknowledged the valuable lessons he has learned from his wife. Queen Mary has shown him that he is not always right and that his words are not automatically believed just because he is the man of the house. The King described their relationship as having reached a stable point, highlighting the love he has for his wife, their children, and their happy family life.
Queen Mary and King Frederik have been married since 2004 and have four children together: Crown Prince Christian, Princess Isabella, and twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine. Following the abdication of his 83-year-old mother, Queen Margrethe, King Frederik succeeded the throne. The decision for Queen Margrethe to step down after a reign of 52 years came as a shock to many, and King Frederik now carries on the proud royal legacy.
Queen Mary’s attendance at the 2024 Men’s EHF Euro final showcased her commitment to supporting Danish athletes and promoting international sportsmanship. Despite the outcome of the match, the Queen expressed her admiration for both teams’ efforts. As she continues to fulfill her royal duties alongside King Frederik, their enduring love and partnership serve as an inspiration to others. The Danish monarchy remains strong under their leadership, and the future looks promising for the royal couple and their nation.
