Clay Aiken is gay.

The former American Idol finalist has officially revealed his sexual preference in the latest issue of People Magazine.

The Hollywood Gossip staff had two thoughts when we heard this news:

1. D’uh!
2. Who cares? How do the body parts Aiken finds arousing have anything to do with what kind of person he is or how talented a musician he is?

Hopefully, we’re not alone in these reactions.

But, as is often the case, those with a negative opinions are making themselves heard the loudest so far.

Here are a few message board posts from a Clay Aiken fan site. Bear in mind, these were people that considered themselves major followers of the singer prior to his announcement, making their homophobia and outrage that much more appalling:

trollynn63: “This is a gut wrenching day for The ClayNation. Somebody wake me up, I hope its a dream.”

Holmes24: “please tell me I’m not the only one who is shocked beyond belief! I feel numb I’m so upset. This can’t be real!! How can you guys say this won’t change anything? This changes EVERYTHING. I don’t even know what to think right now.”

plumclayzy: “This will be it for me. I cannot continue to support him financially now that I know he has chosen this lifestyle. My mind boggles when I think about how ‘lied to’ I feel. It doesn’t look like my expressed opinion will be a popular one, but that’s OK.”

clayncfan: “I’ve cried a river of tears and truthfully do not know where I stand right now.”

Please tell us there are some rational, sane, intelligent Clay fans out there willing to come to the defense of this admirable singer. You know, people like Simon Cowell and his reaction to this announcement:

“Wow, that’s a shock. It’s like being told Santa Claus isn’t real - unbelievable.”

Despite the popularity of last season’s two finalists - seriously, people love David Archuleta and David Cook - American Idol producers knew they had to shake up the show a bit.

Ratings were in decline, complaints about staleness were prominent, Randy Jackson couldn’t go two sentences without uttering the word “dawg.” What was the show to do?

According to a new report, Paula Abdul has undergone neck surgery to repair an old cheerleading injury.

The neck problem has reportedly been a persistent cause of pain since she was a teenager and was made worse by a automobile accident in 1987.

Pain = a lot of pain pills?????

Poor Paula’s been in a pain a loooooooooooooooooooong time!

She had the surgery done earlier this month so she’d be ready to go for American Idol’s New York auditions, which began early last week.

Back in 2005, Paula opened up about her neck pain and stated that she tried taking different medications prescribed by physicians to ease the pain, but nothing worked. She also admitted that the drugs sometimes made her “loopy.” However, since then she claims the only medication she takes is a Rheumatism remedy called Enbrel.

Wonder what continued to make her loopy during Idol’s early 2008 season?

Regardless, we hope she won’t be in any more pain!

But David Cook says he was never really a ladies man, lacking the confidence necessary to sweep a potential mate off her feet.

“Looking a pretty woman in the eye and convincing her I’m worth taking a chance on is different,” Cook said recently, when asked to compare his stage bravado with his personal life. “It takes a specific brand of guts, and it’s not the kind I have.”

David Cook may not be smooth, but the American Idol champion wouldn’t have to say much to win over most women.

Kimberly Caldwell may have sung the national anthem at Dodger Stadium Wednesday night - but she received national attention for the man she sat next to afterwards during the game:

Witnesses told E! News this pair, who has been on at least one other date, “were all cute and cuddly… They definitely looked like a couple. But they were acting like they wanted to keep it low-key.”

Kimberly Caldwell sang the national anthem, and then watched the Dodgers fall to the Colorado Rockies.

Cook and Caldwell stayed for the game, cheering on the Dodgers, as they fell 2-1 to the Colorado Rockies in a classic pitcher’s duel.

“Apparently Cook is a big Dodgers fan,” a source said. “He just wanted to enjoy the game with his girl.”

That’s sweet. But if baseball is Cook’s game, perhaps he should date Carrie Underwood.

“Signing a record contract with 19 Recordings/Jive Records is truly a dream come true,” Archuleta said in a statement. “I’m really excited to start working on everything.”

The 17-year-old fan favorite - who finished second on American Idol this season to David Cook - already has three songs on the Hot 100 chart, including his rendition of “Imagine” and “In This Moment.”

Look for Archuleta’s debut album in the fall. In the meantime, catch the cutie on stage as part of The Idols Live Tour, which kicks off July 1 in Arizona.

The former American Idol runner-up demonstrated a rare masculine streak last night, getting all up in the grill of a celebrity gossip photographer from TMZ who just wanted some more information on the unborn child.
